SGA in Desperate Need of Reform

In recent months, many students have complained about what the Student Government Association is doing. Flyers have been posted in Bate targeting the SGA and the SGA president, Michael King, faced impeachment in the fall semester. Now that King has stepped down, many ECU students are questioning the credibility of one of the campus' most widely known organizations. It boils down to the fact that ECU needs to require better qualifications to become president and there should be a way to weed out candidates who run simply because they know they can win. The SGA should not be a popularity contest.

According to Section 5.6 of the Student Government Associations By-Laws, "the SGA President shall receive an annual salary of $600/month, distributed biweekly." The SGA president makes a decent amount of money, so whoever is in office needs to take his or her job seriously. The president sits on with the Board of Trustees and according to the SGA Constitution, he is "to be the chief representative of the student body of East Carolina University in all matters, both internal and external." If the SGA president has so much power on ECU's campus, shouldn't he be held to a higher standard than the rest of the student body?

The president himself cannot be the only one to blame though. ECU's administration has let this happen. There should be more involvement between the administration and student life. In fact, administrators should even keep a closer eye on SGA after all of the controversy that has happened surrounding the president. There aren't any real restrictions on who can run for office and there should be, especially with how much money members of the executive council make.

The SGA and other organizations should do a better job of holding primary elections and conducting actual debates that students want to attend. Students would much rather hear realistic proposals than promises made by the executive branch that they can't follow through with.

The final problem with the SGA and ECU is the complete lack of student involvement. Most students do not care about SGA and the students who do vote on OneStop usually just pick a name that sounds the most familiar to them. It's unfortunate that students are so apathetic toward SGA. However, the Student Government Association won't take themselves seriously until the student body takes them seriously, so it is our responsibility as ECU students to care about who we elect as officials on our campus to make any sort of change happen.
