1. Media Relations
Overall this year has been full of success for our Student Governments communication with the general student population. Not only have the times and dates of our meetings been well advertised, but they have reached record attendance levels. We owe this in large part to the excellent coverage we are offered from our school newspaper, the Minarett. Each week there is a designated SG section on the front page of the newspaper where you can find all the pertinent information regarding issues and dates and times that SG is working on. The write-ups are very positive and promote greater recognition of our work. Finally our Public Relations chair has done a great job of providing student government information on the weeks that the Minarette is not published. The Student Government newsletter named the "Governance" came out in November and highlighted SG's accomplishments thus far. Our new blackboard site as well as free t-shirts at meetings have had great success with our students.
2. Fiscal Responsibility
This year's Treasurer was exteremely familiar with the fiscal process that our SG has. Due to this familiarity he was able to set up a true Finance Code that has never been implemented in the past. The finance code is a way to have designated regulations for requesting appropriations and allocations. Overall the Finance code has had great impact in setting up a checks and balance system for our SG. This is vital to the survival of any organazation but a great example is the United States of America. The Finance Code is supplemented by a Finance committee that meets twice a week and analyzes the different requests and manners to better the process. Overall these improvements have had great positive effects on our extremely tough budget management.
3. Leadership Training & Development
One of the weaknesses I will adress will be lack of transition. This problem is not entire due to the past leaders, but it was definitely corrected by this years. The manner in which we have made up for our transition issues is through leadership development. Primarily this development has occured through conferences in which training and opportunities to discuss all types of SG issues with other schools. The first conference that the President and Vice-President attended was the NACA conference in Washington DC in the summer. This provided one of the greatest opportunities for new skills and techniques for success to be developed. It did not just end with the President and VP, once we returned to campus we had leadership sessions in which we imparted any knowledge we had gained to the rest of the Executive Board. The other conference that we attended was called ICUF and is the association of Florida Independant schools. Here we were matched up with many more institutions that are dealing with the same type of issues that we are. many ideas were shared and overall we probably contributed to helping other schools just as much as learning how to better ours.
1. Transition Planning & Execution
This is actually going to seem more like a really great story. See, for some of the executive, the transition was made tremendously simple. In fact, 2 positions actually had the unbelievable advantage of simply maintaining the same position from before. Other leaders simply switched positions but this was not so easy for myself. Believe it or not, my election campaign was actually run from Malaga Spain as I completed a study abroad program last spring. I didn't have the opportunity to complete the entire transition process due to the great distance in between. This however doesn't seem to be a problem we will have to deal with much in the future. In fact, it was probably more of a fluke occurance that I don't foresee occurring ever again.
2. Productivity & Time Management
Aside from the normal office hours that each member has to complete, and the main general assembly meeting there is one other meeting that could possibly be deemed the most imporant. This meeting would be the Executive Board meeting that is run by the President. These meetings have traditionally been held at 6pm immediately preceding the 7pm general assembly meetings every Tuesday. One hour would normally amount to enough time until this year when we had way more to talk about than could be discussed in that time. On occasion we have gone a little late, or run out of time for everyone to discuss something and it has been realized. Next semesters Executive Board meetings are to be held at 5pm instead of at 6pm. This would resolve our problem and allow for as much time as we need to resolve all our issues.
3. Administrators, Relations With
Most of the administration including our advisor and the Dean of Students have been extremely responsive to all the student concerns. I truly feel like SG has a great relationship with the entire school in general but if I could push for a little more, it would be super. For instance, I've met other SG Presidents that have told me that they spend time with the school Presidents on a weekly basis. They find time to go out and play golf and discuss issues and become closer. The President at our school has not expressed any sign of these types of ideas and I can't really blame him for that. But if I need to provide three weaknesses, this would be one.
