  • Concordia College (MN) - SGA Diversity Forums

    DIVERSITY FORUMS

We are hosting "Diversity Forums" to have important discussions on diversity at Concordia. The purpose is to give students a platform to express problems people are facing at Concordia. What we learned will be forwarded to institutional leaders and used to inform SGA initiatives.

    Racial and Ethnic Diversity

On MLK Day 2020, SGA kicked off our Diversity Forums for the semester. The first topic was racial and ethnic diversity. The event was an open mic for students of racially and ethnically minoritized people. You can find the notes from the event here.

  • Florida Southern College - Red Friday (Signature Program)

In previous years, SGA had "Red Friday" events, a giveaway one Friday every month where students could only get the giveaway if they wore red. The idea started with the 2022-2023 executive board with Skippy Paquette, the Vice President of Student Activities at the time. Over the Summer of 2023, the SGA President and Vice President of Student Activities came up with the action plan to bring this expansion of the program to life and increase school spirit overall.

Every Friday is considered a Red Friday, meaning we encourage students, faculty, and staff to wear red. One Friday a month is called a "Really Red Friday" where we give away seasonal-themed giveaways. For instance, at the February Really Red Friday we gave away Valentine's Day trinkets (mini stuffed bears, stuffed candy hearts, mini heart containers, and doughnuts).

At the beginning of the school year, the new Red Friday Every Friday shirts were distributed to all first-year students in their Orientation packet when they moved into campus. The rest of the student body received their shirts after a student-led convocation where the initiative was announced. Shirts were also distributed to faculty and staff members with the idea that the entire school should participate. Shirts were also free for the remainder of the year in the Student Life building. When ordering the shirts, we opted for a higher quality to encourage people to wear them more often. Only new students will be given the shirts from now on, making the cost more reasonable.

We have about 3,000 students at Florida Southern College, plus faculty and staff. At the "Really Red Friday" events, we tend to have about 100 giveaways and average above that in attendance.

Florida Southern has been phenomenal in promoting the Red Friday Every Friday initiative. Overall, the initiative has been written about by the school newspaper and mentioned on our institution's Instagram and website.

Each semester the administration will host a Dean's Forum to communicate directly with students about the current state of the law school.  After the faculty and administration have left the room, SBA will continue in the same manner to receive feedback from students so that we can communicate that back to the administration and better serve our student body.

    Dodgeball
Dodge, duck, dip, dive, and DODGE!  Every Spring semester, SBA puts on a Dodgeball tournament for all students in the "Pepperdome": a huge dodgeball arena right in the middle of the atrium.  Come out to show your athletic skills, or simply dress your team up in the best costumes to win prizes.  Sign your team up in the atrium in the weeks before the tournament.

    In-N-Out Burger Day

The Annual Law School Dinner is the most highly anticipated event of the year. Attending this event are faculty, administration, alumni, members of the legal community, and students. Distinguished speakers have included Supreme Court Justices and Counsel to the President of the United States. A reception is followed with dinner. Professor of the Year and Moot Court awards are presented thereafter. Law students can purchase tickets to the Dinner at a discounted price.

In addition, SBA provides funding and support to all of our Student Organizations on campus, and we encourage you to participate in those events as well!
