    1. Extended library hours
The University of Massachusetts Boston, as a commuter school with no housing, has limited library hours. Due to a $100 million budget shortfall and lack of support from the state, the university is on its second year of emergency cuts mandated by the state. One of the victims of these cuts is the Healey Library. The library hours have been cut back heavily, to the point where students are being removed in the early afternoon on saturdays. Sundays the library is closed completely. The student government is using the student activities trust fund to extend library hours on certain days the week prior to and the week of finals. The library will be open until the early morning on critical study days with computer and book stack access. Shuttle buses to local transit will also be extended. This highly visible signature program hopes to be beneficial to the every day student and the working class, who do not always have the days to devote to studying.
