The editors of Student Leader identified the need for this organization in the fall of 2002 and began concerted work on developing the organization in the spring of 2003.
Through a survey promoted in Student Leader and Florida Leader magazines which could be found at www.asgaonline.com, the editors gathered feedback from more than 225 Student Government leaders and advisors, which helped shape the direction the organization would eventually take.
The direct feedback from potential members helped the ASGA team determine which services and resources would be most in demand and useful by members nationwide.
The 100 Founding Members members also offered constructive criticism throughout the beta-testing of the ASGA web site throughout the summer and fall of 2003 before the official launch of ASGA in March 2004.
ASGA's MISSION STATEMENT:
The American Student Government Association will provide all Student Government leaders and advisors nationwide with networking, research, and information resources and will teach them how to become more effective, ethical, and influential leaders on their campuses. ASGA also will promote the advancement of SGs, conduct research as the nation’s only “SG Think Tank,” and advocate the importance of having a vibrant, autonomous Student Government organization at every institution in America.
