Why Should Our Advisor Support ASGA? Membership benefits everyone at a school
Why should your advisor support ASGA? Will ASGA help your advisor as much as Student Government leaders?
Your advisor should support ASGA for several specific reasons:
ASGA is setting national standards for the proper role, duties, and expectations of Student Governments. ASGA has been accepted into the prestigious Council on Standards in Higher Education and will be setting national standards for Student Government operations in the coming years. ASGA's work in this area will directly benefit your advisor, giving him/her clear guidelines and expectations about the role of an advisor and the role of a Student Government. Having this information will make his/her job in advising your organization easier and more defined.
ASGA maintains the only "SG Advisors Only" e-mail list and discussion board in the nation.Your advisor will be able to communicate with other advisors at similar institutions to efficiently network, share ideas, ask questions, learn from each other, and commiserate about problems and issues.
ASGA maintains a complete comprehensive "For Advisors Only" section of the ASGA web site. This includes advisor articles, links, resources, the only advisor-related bibliography in the nation, and more. When your advisors needs information about advising, he'll find it in the Advisors Only section.

Your advisor can search for other advisors with similar experience, educational backgrounds, genders, races, compensation, workloads with SG, and more. The "Advisors" section of the SG Database is completely searchable at any time by your advisor.
ASGA's existence supports the importance of Student Governments nationwide.Your advisor should support the very concept of a national advocate for the importance of Student Governments at all types of higher-education institutions nationwide. It's clear that a strong, effective, and influential Student Government ALWAYS indicates that there is a strong student affairs component at that institution. An effective Student Government means that there is good student involvement on campus, which means that there is better retention of students. When SG is strong, it's easier for your admissions office to recruit students. And SG leaders usually love their institutions and become involved alums after graduating.
ASGA's MISSION STATEMENT:
The American Student Government Association will provide all Student Government leaders and advisors nationwide with networking, research, and information resources and will teach them how to become more effective, ethical, and influential leaders on their campuses. ASGA also will promote the advancement of SGs, conduct research as the nation’s only “SG Think Tank,” and advocate the importance of having a vibrant, autonomous Student Government organization at every institution in America.
