Meet the Executive Director of ASGA Meet Butch Oxendine, ASGA's founder and executive director, who since 1983 has published books, magazines, and web sites for campus leaders, including Student Leader and Florida Leader.
For more than two decades, W.H. "Butch" Oxendine, Jr., executive director of the American Student Government Association (www.asgaonline.com), has researched and written articles on Student Government issues, led workshops at conventions and conferences, and visited campuses nationwide.
Butch, 54, is a former student body vice president and press secretary at a community college and major state university, and also served as editor in chief of two campus publications. He founded the statewide leadership magazine Florida Leader in 1983 and launched the national Student Government magazine Student Leader in 1992.
He founded and conducts the ongoing "SG Salary Survey," developed the "SG Effectiveness Test," and started the "America’s Best Student Web Sites" awards. He also has conducted cutting-edge research on how to improve campus elections through web and e-mail voting.
Butch has written three leadership books on Student Government issues, including "So You Want to Be President...How to Get Elected on Your Campus," "Poster Secrets: How & Where to Hang Flyers On Your Campus," and "Inspiration for Student Leaders," and also has contributed to several other books, including writing the forward for "Young Leader."
From 1992 until 2007, Butch's company Oxendine Publishing published the nationally respected magazine Student Leader, which was widely read at 1,400 institutions across America. He also published the statewide magazine Florida Leader, with editions for college and high school students, for 22 years. Butch founded the prestigious annual "Florida College Student of the Year Awards" in 1987 (see www.floridaleader.com/soty) and in 1989 founded the annual "Best of Florida Schools Awards" (see www.floridaleader.com).
A devoted family man, Butch is married to Kathy, a former teacher, and together they have five children (Leah-22, Will-18, and twin boys Adam and Andrew-14, and 11-year-old Luke.
ASGA's MISSION STATEMENT:
The American Student Government Association will provide all Student Government leaders and advisors nationwide with networking, research, and information resources and will teach them how to become more effective, ethical, and influential leaders on their campuses. ASGA also will promote the advancement of SGs, conduct research as the nation’s only “SG Think Tank,” and advocate the importance of having a vibrant, autonomous Student Government organization at every institution in America.
