Press Clipping: Cheyney University SGCA Members Attend National Student Government Conference
This article from the Cheyney University web site mentions ASGA's 2013 National SG Summit.

Cheyney University SGCA Members Attend National Student Government Conference

When the American Student Government Association (ASGA) held its four-day Summit October 3-6, 2013 in Bethesda MD, a contingent of Cheyney University Student Government Cooperative Association (SGCA) members were on hand to soak up the wealth of information presented.  Corresponding Secretary Desmond King, Recording Secretary Zakia Royster, Governor Malasia Clarke, Residence Council Representative Yuhanna Muhammad, Treasurer Aisha Harris, Appointed Student Representative on the SGCA Board of Directors (BOD) Aaron Yancey, Chair of the BOD Barbara Daniel Cox '66, BOD Sheree Monroe '04, and Alumni Director/SGCA Advisor Gregory Benjamin '83, made the trek to the Hyatt Regency, just outside of Washington, DC, where dozens of workshops and roundtable discussions were held.

The purpose of the summit was to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of student government. Expert consultation was provided for colleges and universities of all sizes. In all, several hundred student leaders and advisors from more than 100 U.S. institutions attended.

“I learned how to be a more effective leader,” King said.  “I also learned that there’s no ‘I’ in ‘team’ and how important it is to get things done in a timely manner.”  He was disappointed that he could not tour the U.S. Capitol as expected because the government is shut down thanks to a stalemate by lawmakers over spending bills tied to healthcare.

King, a Business Administration Marketing major, liked networking and seeing how other student governments work.  He believes that he and his colleagues came back from the conference as a more cohesive group.

According to Benjamin, the conference was an ideal opportunity for Cheyney’s student government leaders to learn and grow.  “The speakers were excellent and there were plenty of opportunities for the students to exchange ideas and success strategies with their peers.  Our SGCA attendees came back to CU filled with ideas that are sure to benefit our campus community.”

American Student Government Association

The American Student Government Association will provide all Student Government leaders and advisors nationwide with networking, research, and information resources and will teach them how to become more effective, ethical, and influential leaders on their campuses. ASGA also will promote the advancement of SGs, conduct research as the nation’s only “SG Think Tank,” and advocate the importance of having a vibrant, autonomous Student Government organization at every institution in America.
